Mac vs PC: Which is better?

Among computer geeks, there’s long been a debate on which computer is better: Mac or PC. I would say the average non-geek generally goes with the PC, for the reduced cost, it’s wide circulation of Windows based software, and well, because you can easily find a PC anywhere – even Walmart.

Then you have the uber geeks, who at one time were a rare lot of folks who wanted a computer system that was ‘bug-free’, virtually virus impenetrable, and full of functions and features that only true uber geeks even know how to use. These fine folks bought Macs.

MacBook AirThe Mac vs PC debate has even spread to my home office. I’ll admit I have PCs, but long to get a Mac. Why, because I’m an uber geek wannabe, and I’m not ashamed to admit it.  Some uber geeks get a little ‘high and mighty’ over their stance that Macs are better. I do not take offense, because if you’ve ever gotten the ‘blue screen of death’ on your PC, you’d quickly become an uber geek wannabe yourself and start drooling over a featherweight MacBook Air.

I have gotten that blue screen of death more than once, and a few months ago, my PC crashed and I lost everything. [Yeah, no lectures please on backing up your computer]  I had my external hard drive of info still intact, but did not have a recent backup of my PC, so lost it all. Talk about frustrating! Lesson learned though, backup your computer regularly and often!

So why have I not made the switch to a Mac? Cost is probably the main reason why most folks remain PC users, despite the issues they encounter. I’ll admit, cost is also a factor for me as well; but not the main reason. For me, it’s about software compatibility. There are certain software that I have, and use, daily, or at least regularly, that are not Mac compatible. Eating the cost of a switch to Mac is one thing, but add to that the cost of my time to learn all new software – yikes!

Then along comes VMware Fusion 2; a bridge so you can run PC programs on your Mac (I’m hearing a choir of angels singing hallelujah!). Yes! There is a God and I’m convinced he’s a Mac user. ;)

Ok – so I now have this realization that I can actually get a Mac, still run my needed PC programs and all will be well. There’s still the cost factor of buying a new Mac. They’re not cheap, but then, I will be saving on repair shop bills trying to revive the old girl from the ‘blue screen of death’. A huge plus!

So on my list for the first quarter of next year is to get myself a Mac; preferably a MacBook Air. I want lightweight, as my current laptop could be used for resistance weight training during my Fat Loss Quickie workouts.

Until my plan comes to fruition, I’ll have to settle for this Mac in my laptopMac (aka: MacGuyver) in my laptop case case. Good thing his real name is MacGuyver, so should my PC conk out on me before I get my new MacBook Air, he should be able to fix it with a bubble gum wrapper and a paper clip.

To YOUR Success,

Traci Knoppe

P.S. Tell me, are you a Mac or PC user? Why do you use Mac or PC?

P.P.S. This is my other cat. His real name is Moses, we call him Moe – but since cats never come when you call them anyway, I’m going to start calling him PC.  Notice is red ‘clown nose’, kind of fitting he should be called PC. Don’t worry, Moe/PC is a loveable cat, but he is a bit awkward and shy. So PC seems to fit.

Moe - aka: PC

Hi Traci! No doubt you’ve heard me on WDG list that I wanna be a Mac user, probably since the 90s! The thing is, my hubby is an IT guy, so discarded and laptops and parts for such come cheap or free to my home.

However, I’ve had THREE crashes this year, 2 from viruses, one from a broken hardware, and let me tell you that I didn’t download a thing on that second virus. These are good PCs/laptops, high quality, a great brand too. And yes, I lost data (so I wont lecture you on backups!).

Is there a Mac in my future? Financially, not any time soon, what with the free PCs and parts. But one day I will!

Love my Mac! But the internet is speeding up, the mac is not. Can’t afford a new one. Even if I could afford a PC, what do I do with the incompatible files? We should bombard Apple with petitions for free giveaways, or special offers or just a less expensive version. Still, Mac does rather well even if its like the Granddad of the young mac guy in the commercials. Hangs up, but doesn’t crash. Less worry about viruses too.

Nice article, Traci. I dugg it.

I bought my first Mac the year they came out, in 1984, and have only owned Macs since then. I’ve never had a crash or a virus. I’ve had to work with PCs a few times (as a second machine) in my previous career as a Macintosh software developer. For me, there is a world of difference. When anyone asks my opinion, I ALWAYS recommend Macs. Macs are just easier and more enjoyable to use (as is the iPhone). A major benefit that is often overlooked, is the free software that comes with Macs, including iLife: iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand. They are integrated together. Macs last longer too, so you don’t have to replace them as often. As for software, you can buy anything you need, with the exception of a few niche business app. For those, the VMware Fusion 2 software works great as a virtual operation system.

  4. Ha! You know where I stand. I am cringing right now as I have to buy a cheap PC laptop for my girlies school. (we each have Mac’s in our home, but she needs to travel with her school program) Was going to use a program like above and just do on her MAC, but its a desktop so we cant travel. :)

You will just be beside yourself when you switch. I have been total MAC for over 7 years. I have never missed a program. Have always found something even better thru a Mac program.

  5. People always talk about how expensive Mac’s are to PC.
But they dont calculate that over the last 7 years I have never taken my mac in for service except for once, and it was completely covered. Not to mention,
HOW MUCH IS MY TIME WORTH!
Just working on the one PC laptop in my house this week has sucked countless hours out of my days.
You DO get what you pay for. And those $$’s come back to you in sooo many ways through a MAC.
That commercial right now with PC, and how you can go in and buy for like $700 and they are so happy to pass on the MAC… I just laugh, cause they will soooooo pay more later in fixing it and time wasted trying to beat the crashes, errors, and blue screen!
    :)

    Hi Traci,
Can you believe that even though I know I’m supposed to do back up on an external hard drive I haven’t done one in months? Yes shame on me. But your post has reminded me to do one so I’m hoping I’ll get this done by the end of the week.
Everybody raves so much about Macs that I have to believe that it’s great. Especially because all of the knowledgeable techies say it’s wonderful.
When I can afford one I will definitely buy a Mac( let me get my fridge paid off first :-D -LOL.
    All the best,
    Eren

Traci, my daughter just took over my 2-year old macbook pro, so I went out to get a macbook air. I was thinking light and portable, and that seemed the logical choice. In the store, I took a closer look at the new 13″ macbook pro. It’s not too heavy, blows the mb air out of the water in terms of functionality, and it cost less! For $1800 I would have had the base model Air, and for $1500 I had the top of the line 13″ Pro. I’m very happy with my purchase. It’s easy to carry and does everything my imac can do, so I’m not tied to my desk all the time.

    Take a look.

    Thanks everyone for your comments!

Lisa: thanks for the tip on the Macbook Pro! :)

  9. Hi Traci,

I love this post — I could have written it! My laptop is about 3 1/2 years old and there are days I am not sure it is going to make it. I have seen the blue screen of death twice this last month! Or it just freezes and does nothing!

I am hanging on for a Mac, but cost of changing programs on top of a more expensive laptop, has stopped me.

After reading these posts, I am not sure investing in another less expensive laptop is more economical than just going for the Mac.

    I’ll let you know!
