When WordPress version 2.7 came out, it had a built-in upgrading feature. Up until that version, one either had to go through a lot of steps to manually upgrade WordPress, or one could use my recommended WP Automatic Upgrade plugin, which made the process streamlined and uber easy.
The below video shows you how to use the new upgrading feature within version 2.7 and my comments on this feature overall.

Hi Traci,
The video is great and I’m sure the new upgrade feature is easy when in works, but, I when I tried it on my blog all I ended up with was the WP files added to a directory on my server. Had to get my hosting company tech support to take them down for me because the file ownership prevented me from doing it.
And it seems as though I can no longer access the automatic upgrade plugin. When I questioned it on the WordPress support forum, the reply was that I should use the manual upgrade because the plugin “causes problems.” Looking at the plugin page now it does say it’s compatible up to 2.6.1.
Have you used the old plugin to upgrade from 2.7?
Hopefully I’m not relegated to manual upgrades from now on. It sure was a lot easier to use the plugin.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Hi Linda. Sorry you’re having troubles upgrading with the new auto upgrade feature. Every hosting server setup is a little different I suppose, and without tracing down *why* your upgrade failed, I would only be guessing.
What you may have to do this time is do a manual upgrade. However, I would strongly recommend the WP Automatic Upgrade plugin. It works beautifully and in my opinion, better and more thoroughly than the built-in upgrade feature for WP 2.7. Yes, some of the first versions of this plugin were a little quirky, but it has been greatly improved since then.
I successfully updated manually. The WP Automatic Upgrade plugin didn’t work for me. I’m thinking it may need to be updated for 2.7, however now that there’s a auto upgrade included in WP, I wonder if the developer will update the plugin.
Oh well.. manual isn’t hard, it’s just more time consuming…
Hi Linda
The latest version of the WP automatic upgrade plugin is v. 1.2.2.
I hope the developer continues, because the built-up upgrade feature with WP does not backup your database & files for you! That’s so important and many folks don’t know how to do that, so they may continue without doing it and if there should be a problem, they risk losing everything.
2.7 is worth it! I love the new dashboard and WordPress tv.
Hey Traci,
I just had to take a moment to thank you for making me aware of the auto update plugin. I used it to update our site and it worked like a charm!
Thanks so much!
Mike
Excellent Mike. Glad to be of help.
