WordPress 3.0 Has Arrived!

The latest major release of WordPress has arrived: version 3.0. I have been beta testing this for a short while, and really like it.

There are some major changes in this version and there’s two in particular I want to discuss:

  1. Child Themes
  2. Custom menus

The trend in WordPress themes has gone to having a parent/frame theme and then to create various child themes that work with the frame to provide completely different looks. The Genesis Theme is one theme that offers child themes.

In WordPress 3.0, gone is the old default Kubrick theme, and in is the new Twenty Ten theme that supports child themes. This is HUGE news and I love it!

Also found in this new theme and supported in v3.0 is a totally awesome customizable  menu that supports unlimited sub-menus.

Instead of me typing it all out – watch this video to see what’s new in WordPress 3.0.

I’m also testing out WP 3.0 for my new site as I’m not yet ready to upgrade my old site to the new version. I must say the new features are really very nice especially the new menu system. It is also good to know that on a local install, my old site upgraded to 3.0 looks good. No errors or breaks in the plugins I use. :) Now all we need is more themes that support the new custom menus. Some of the themes have been updated already. One example is the Constructor theme.

  2. Hi Traci, Gary here.
I was in my WP admin area and seen the WP 3.0 upgrade and thought that I need to find out more about it before I upgrade. Ya see, I’ve often heard people say to never use any software that ends in “.0″ So….

Genesisblogging.com was the place that I decided to go to first to learn more about the WP 3.0.

Thanks for the info and the video! Also, do think it’s safe to go ahead and upgrade, or should I wait for 3.1? I value your opinion greatly.

    Thanks! And Stay Boosted! ;)

    Hi Gary
I have upgraded a few of my blogs and a couple client blogs, and so far – no issues.

Personally, I think it’s safe to upgrade. IF you have an issue after upgrading, it’s almost always an incompatible plugin. I’ve noticed some plugin developers are already pushing updates for their plugins to make them compatible with WP 3.0.

So like with any upgrade, no 100% guarantee all with go smoothly, but in most cases it does. Should you upgrade, and have an issue, deactivate ALL of your plugins, then reactivate them one at a time, checking your site until you find the one causing the issue. Then either see if an upgrade for that plugin is available or find a compatible substitute.

  4. Thanks Traci! Good advice about the “Possible” plugin issues. I’ll follow your advice and let you know if I have any problems so that you can use the info for your blogging. Cool?

WordPress 3.2 is out and it`s great! It`s still in Beta.
    Here`s a list of what`s new:

Performance improvements like you wouldn’t believe. What’s that mean? Things are faster!
Distraction-free Writing. The visual editor’s full-screen composing experience has gotten a major overhaul, and is now available from HTML mode, too. More than ever, WordPress allows you to focus on what matters most — your content.
Admin UI Refresh. The last major redesign of the WordPress admin was in 2008. This isn’t a major redesign, just a little facelift to keep us feeling young. WordPress turns 8 later this month, you know.
New Default Theme. Introducing Twenty Eleven, based on the popular Duster theme. Rotating header images, post format support, and more.
Browse Happy. WordPress is made to work with modern browsers. If you visit your Dashboard using an outdated web browser, we’ll let you know there’s a newer version available.
    Admin Bar.

I recommend trying it out as soon as you have the chance!
