WP didn’t recognize my Flash files or MP4 files and the few it did recognize it wanted to play in QuickTime. I thought that maybe I encoded my vids incorrectly or Murphy’s Law found a wormhole into my install. Not at all. Amazingly, the default WP install does not include a Flash player, which prevents it from playing Flash.

Try checking which file format you're trying to use and make sure it matches the format of your video. Flash is supposed to work with the built-in video embed, but clearly some have issues with that. In that case (and probably to make all this much easier) try the Vipers Quick Tags video embedding plugin. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/vipers-video-quicktags/ This plugin does allow you to embed Flash video file formats, as well as several other formats and also easily add video from several popular video sharing sites (i.e. YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, etc...).
