How to Embed Video into WordPress

A short video tutorial to show you how to embed video into WordPress using the embedded media feature within WordPress.

This covers videos you want to embed into a post or page that play with a video player, and that are not uploaded to a video sharing site like YouTube or Vimeo, but stand alone video files.

    Hi Traci-

This tutorial is just what I need, and it is so easy to understand. Finally!! Thank you for this :)

So I did follow the video step by step and my video is still not showing up on the blog post.

When I view the post and hover the mouse over the video this is the message I get:

    “play”:”false”,”menu”:”false”,”src”:http://panicfreeme.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/charles-home_320x180″

And the saved post shows nothing but white space where the video is supposed to be.

I wonder what the hey I’m still doing wrong?

Mmmmm. When I enter in the URL to your video (http://panicfreeme.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/charles-home_320×180) I’m getting a page not found.

So try re-uploading the video into your media library, and then try the steps in the video again. Could be the video did not upload properly the first time. :)

  3. Lisa says:

I have over the past 2 days uploaded this little video oh about 14 times ;)

So I deleted all 14, and I re uploaded the video into my media library, and I checked the url, which is still a 404 page:

    http://panicfreeme.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/charles-home_320x180_wide1.flv‘,width:’320,height:’180′

    I’m bumfuzzled beyond belief.

  4. Traci Knoppe says:

What is the actual name of just the flv video file? Is it charles-home_320x180_wide1.flv?

If so, try renaming the file to something very simple like: charleshome.flv No underscores, x or anything else in the name.

I’m confused as to why the width:’20,height:’180′ is coming from. That should not be any part of the URL you would copy from the Media Library URL field for this file; but even if I try to just copy the rest of it, you’re right, it’s not showing.

So try the renaming, re-upload and see if that fixes it.

  5. Lisa says:

Ok, here is the new name of the file: http://panicfreeme.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/chlarleshome.flv

This does not give a 404, and yet I still get the blank video on the published post.

    I think we’re getting there…..? :)

Ok – when you clicked the Embed icon (the green filmstrip), did you choose Flash as the video type?

  7. Lisa says:

    Yes I did.

  8. Lisa says:

    Hi Traci, me again, lol.

As Flash didn’t seem to work, so I chose Quicktime.

Now where there was only white space, there is a large blue Q (quicktime I presume) with a big question mark in the middle of it.

This is the problematic blog post:

Did you have any other suggestions for me to get this video up and running?

    Hi Traci,

Excellent vid. I followed all your steps and cannot self-host a video on the site. I can link to anything outside and it displays, but self-hosted vids in the Media Library will not display. What do you have your permission set at for your Uploads folder?

    • Traci Knoppe says:

If you can upload and display images uploaded via your dashboard, then you should be able to display videos. Try checking which file format you’re trying to use and make sure it matches the format of your video.

Flash is supposed to work with the built-in video embed, but clearly some have issues with that. In that case (and probably to make all this much easier) try the Vipers Quick Tags video embedding plugin. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/vipers-video-quicktags/

This plugin does allow you to embed Flash video file formats, as well as several other formats and also easily add video from several popular video sharing sites (i.e. YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, etc…). With this plugin you can use the URL to the video you have uploaded to your media library, or anywhere on your web site, and embed that URL in when inserting a new video and it will work.

      Hope this helps you!

  10. MTG says:

Please disregard. It’s not a permissions issue. Apparently WP does not support all Flash files — is this correct?

  11. MTG says:

    F I X E D ! !

    Thank you very much!

WP didn’t recognize my Flash files or MP4 files and the few it did recognize it wanted to play in QuickTime. I thought that maybe I encoded my vids incorrectly or Murphy’s Law found a wormhole into my install. Not at all. Amazingly, the default WP install does not include a Flash player, which prevents it from playing Flash.

    Thanks again!
